CERAWeek 2026: Energy security in an era of disruption

Energy leaders from around the world will soon descend on downtown Houston for CERAWeek 2026 (March 23-27), marking one of the signature milestones on the global calendar. The official theme—"Convergence and Competition: Energy, Technology and Geopolitics"—points to a future of integrated supply chains and AI-driven efficiency. Yet the immediate reality is defined by multiple converging pressures: geopolitical instability, surging energy demand from AI infrastructure, and critical supply chain vulnerabilities.

CERAWeek (as it typically does) will feature senior U.S. government administration officials, this year including Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, and all five commissioners of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. It will also draw several energy titans from the Gulf, including ADNOC CEO Dr. Sultan Al Jaber (UAE), Aramco CEO Amin Nasser (Saudi Arabia), and dozens of other government delegations.

Their messages are sure to resonate across markets as the U.S. navigates a multi-front geopolitical and economic landscape.

Three structural themes defining the week

1. AI & power: The infrastructure challenge

The race for "compute" is an energy race. Data centers are pushing grids to their breaking point, leading to the Trump administration's recent Ratepayer Protection Pledge to ensure industrial AI demand doesn't spike costs for everyday consumers. Expect intensive discussion around grid modernization, baseload capacity, and the role of nuclear and advanced geothermal in meeting this unprecedented demand.

2. Critical minerals framework: Building strategic independence

The U.S. has pivoted from "incentives" to a demand-side "minerals club." Through initiatives like Project Vault—a $12 billion strategic reserve—and the FORGE partnership, the U.S. is attempting to build a preferential trading bloc for the 60 minerals essential to modern defense and energy technology, specifically designed to withstand Chinese price manipulation. This represents a fundamental shift in how democracies approach resource security.

3. Energy security and price volatility: Iran and supply shocks

Recent disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz—a chokepoint for 20 million barrels of oil daily and 20% of global LNG flows—have sent oil prices past $100 a barrel for the first time since 2022. The cascading impacts extend beyond crude oil to fertilizers, petrochemicals, and critical minerals. Governments worldwide are exploring strategies to insulate themselves from such price shocks and lower fuel prices, including accelerating the use of domestic biofuels to reduce dependence on volatile international oil markets. The bidding war between Asia and Europe for diverted LNG cargoes illustrates how quickly energy security can become a zero-sum competition.

Innovation and technology focus

Across the conference in both the executive section and CERAWeek's innovation hub, known as the Agora, participants can expect heightened focus on energy technologies like advanced geothermal, nuclear (fission and fusion), advanced batteries, and next-generation grid enhancements, as well as mobility solutions and a renewed emphasis on optimizing oil and gas operations.

The FGS perspective: Navigating the noise

For CERAWeek attendees, the challenge is moving beyond the headlines to find actionable strategies for impact. Success in Houston this year requires:

  • Strategic alignment: Mapping corporate goals against government approaches to minerals and AI infrastructure.

  • Geopolitical resilience: Assessing exposure to supply chain vulnerabilities, regional conflicts, and shifting regulatory landscapes in key markets.

  • Profile elevation: Engaging with a media corps focused on the intersection of energy security, technology infrastructure, and domestic political contexts.

In a world where energy security and national security are increasingly intertwined, the conversations in Houston will set the strategic direction for the decade to come.
